Reliability & Longevity:: American or Foreign? And whats the best makes of vehicles?

Here's a question for the ages. Personal opinion factors into a lot of arguments like this due to the quality controls in place with the manufacturers today. Most every vehicle leaves the factory with better than 99.5% of parts working correctly, which helps everything work together longer. In my experience, Toyota makes the most boringly reliable vehicles, Honda, Subaru and Nissan make vehicles with a great blend of sport and reliability. Korean cars like Hyundai and Kia have come from humble roots to make some of the most reliable and even stylish cars for a low cost. German vehicles are mechanically pretty good, but expensive when they break. They are also electrical nightmares, tricky to diagnose and require special tools to work on. American vehicles of the current generation are vastly improved over anything an American company has ever offered. We'll have to wait years to know if they hold up, but for now, the new batch of American vehicles appear to have addressed their shortfalls. GM and Ford have released high quality vehicles with above average initial quality of late, and Chrysler just introduced an entirely new V6 engine and Fiat's addressing their interior (lack of) quality vehicle by vehicle. All in all, if you're shopping new, I would look for the car I like the most. There's such a huge push for quality in every company, that I wouldn't argue against any manufacturer. If you're looking to pick up a used car, the Koreans offer the most reliability for the least money, followed by the Japanese. After saying all that, this information is coming from a mechanic and business owner who drives a Ford that's over a decade old and has no problems.
