Can puberty cause suicidal thoughts?

I've been on anti-depressants and other medications since I was only 13 years old. I've always thought the reason why is because my hormones were going crazy during that age, which I always assumed was because of puberty. I had plenty of suicidal thoughts and probably 2-3 actual attempts with a knife. I've been doing research about the dangers of medication and I seem to have some of the side effects these meds cause. I've even read that medication can decrease longevity and possibly cause early death. I really need to know if puberty can cause suicidal thoughts, and if so, could this mean I've been misdiagnosed with depression and I've been needlessly taking medication for 15 years? If anyone could respond to this question with useful answers I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
